for our friend ben hannam and virginia tech university. we wanted to send cards and best wishes to our friend and colleague,
hoping to show solidarity with the entire community, and also express another side of arabic that is lost in the media images of today.

the following are photomontage projections of experiments with type-image relationships that had a dominant arabic
typographic presence and a secondary english translation. the students were asked to develop messages that would speak
to all doha residents, great and small. most chose concepts and themes that sought to address the tensions
they found in the rapid modernization of qatar.

i was fortunate to have so many wonderful and inspired students. it must be mentioned that the inspired photography classes
of our beloved colleague, sally van gorder, played an integral part in the development of their visual vernacular.

the students responded admirably, and it is now up to them to propose these beyond the classroom.
