the following are examples of student work made in accordance with a brief by rachel mahler, for the teaching
designers network (an international cooperative based in the freie hochschule freiburg, germany). "the goal is to create
a wall piece/wallpaper for a site defined by the student. in its thematic and stylistic expression, this piece must be
appropriate to its site and its anticipated users."

doha is a labyrinth of walls, shaded windows, and veils. my students chose to focus largely on exterior spaces,
especially the temporary blinds which surround many construction sites. the examples shown here are just a few
results based entirely on arabic letterforms, some of which convey meaning and others that are purely abstract.
the results of this project were the subject of a paper presentation at the 2007 college art association (caa)
conference in new york. > research
